日本漢字能力檢定協會每年都會透過票選決定「今年的漢字」，並且請清水寺住持揮毫寫下這個字。去年日本選出的代表字則是「偽」。
這一年來經過政黨輪替、金融海嘯、油價暴漲急跌、毒奶粉危機，由今周刊和Yahoo!奇摩新聞合作第二屆的「2008年代表字票選」也展開，希望藉由這個票選活動，不但提醒大家重視漢字深奧的意義，也由此看出這一年來人民最深刻的感受。
